July Meeting Minutes 08/06/17

Discussion:
Meriah: Thought it was OK. Didn't like the fake facts and real facts mixed together. Favorite part was in Deadwood. Probably wouldn't recommend. 3/5 stars
Ali: Like it a lot. Loved the Deadwood and leaving Deadwood parts. Have already recommended and leant the book to my co-worker. Liked all the history mixed in to this made up world. 4/5 stars
Julie: Liked it. Had a "Brother Where art thou" feel to it. Liked the Leaving Deadwood scenes. Wanted to know what Jocelyn thought of the Clarified Bear Fat. Would totally recommend. Interesting facts about using pencils to touch up photographs "photoshop" back in the day. Question: What did Marsh mean at the end when he asked Johnson if he could get the bones back and Johnson said No and Marsh said "Then it's all gone!" What did that mean? 4/5 stars
Maren: Really liked it. Had some weird loose ends like the stripper chick he wanted to go back to Cheyenne for and the Emily escapade. Favorite part was Leaving Deadwood. 4/5 stars
Jocelyn: Really enjoyed it. Loved the history facts. Interesting it was written before Jurassic Park and was published after he dies. Might recommend. 3.5/5 stars.

July 2, 2017 Book Club Notes

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Maren’s Pick)
Discussion: Maren- Liked it. More clinical than expected. Wanted more about the families lives. Would recommend to certain people. 3.5/5
Ali- Liked it. A little text booky at times, but feel more educated. Shocked that our cells can be taken and used. Would recommend to certain people with a disclaimer. 5/5
Jocelyn- Loved it. Very educational. At times, I would be wishing for a fictional story, but as soon as I started in I would be instantly hooked again. Liked the back and forth between the two stories. Would recommend to certain people. 4.5/5
Meriah- Liked it. Loved the family story. Sometimes too much like a textbook. Kind of a hard book about HeLa cells. Would not recommend. 3/5
Julie- I enjoyed the book. It was very interesting. Lots of names and dates which made it difficult to keep track of the story at times. Would recommend. 3/5

May 21, 2017 Book Club Notes

The Round House (Jocelyn’s Pick)

Discussion:
Julie- Didn’t like it in the beginning, to heartbreaking. Ended up really enjoying it. Wordy at times, but liked the grammar. Would recommend. 3.5/5
Jocelyn- I liked it. Learned a lot about living on a Reservation and the laws that apply. Loved that it was told through a 13-year-old boys point of view. Would recommend. 3.5/5
Ali- Yawning in the beginning, then became intrigued. Liked the 80’s descriptions. Loved the frienships. Felt educated. Would recommend. 3/5
Maren- Hard to get into. Lots of characters, but well written. Liked that the village fed everyone. Would recommend. 4/5
Meriah- DID NOT FINISH. WILL GET PIE TO THE FACE!!
Favorite Characters: Julie- Cappy and Mooshum Jocelyn- Father Travis and Cappy Ali- Cappy and Linda Maren- Linda, Aunt Clemance, and Grandma
